What Is Tobacco & Where Is Tobacco Grown?
How tobacco plants have come to tickle our tastebuds
Believe it or not, there are more than 70 varieties of tobacco, or should we say Nicotiana tabacum. A member of the nightshade family, it's a plant characterized by its simple oval leaves, thick hairy stems, and large clusters of flowers – which vary from red and pink to cream and white. And it’s the leaves that give off a rich, sweet, earthy aroma when first picked and dried.
Where did tobacco originate, and where is tobacco grown?
Originally from the Americas, tobacco is a crop that grows best in rich soil and full sun. Today, the answer to the question, where is tobacco from, is all over the globe. In contrast to its tropical origins, tobacco is now grown as far north as Norway and all the way to Australia.
You might not know that historians believe that tobacco leaves were first smoked more than 12,300 years ago. Today, it’s associated with products like cigarettes, tobacco sticks and tobacco pouches.
How does Ploom use what is in tobacco?
At JTI, we've created a modern tobacco experience with our EVO sticks. We select tobacco from over 30 countries to achieve a blend that delivers a rich tobacco taste from start to finish of your Ploom Aura Advanced experience. For example, dark fire-cured tobacco leaves from Africa are chosen for their roasted nuttiness. Whilst, Mediterranean plants bring subtle spicy, woody, with some sweet and sour notes and Asian flue-cured tobacco leaves add spicy, creamy, slightly woody notes.
How long does tobacco last?
The growing period of tobacco plants is surprisingly short. With EVO sticks, the tobacco seedlings are cultivated for 60 days before planting and the mature leaves are harvested two to four months later. That’s when we cure and pack the crop and safely age it in our warehouse for anything from a few months to a few years.
What is a smokeless tobacco, and what are the different flavors?
In the context of a story that stretches back over thousands of years, the history of heated tobacco is brief. And, like any innovation, there are lots of ways to describe it - smokeless tobacco is but one.
At JTI, our focus is to deliver the best high-quality experience for products offering reduced-risk potential¹, which is why we developed Ploom Aura and EVO tobacco sticks to give you rich authentic tobacco flavor with no smoke or ash and less tobacco smell than a cigarette²
Our signature ActivBlend, is contained in every EVO stick. Made from a blend of three types of high-quality tobacco, it has added tobacco lamina for an exceptional taste experience.
Along the way from seed to stick, we cut the tobacco to achieve the best possible surface area for heating. Then moisture and flavors are added so you can tickle your tobacco tastebuds with flavors that range from dark, smokey and spicey to complex undertones of vanilla, honey, caramel, and coffee³.
